Unica Zürn
Berlin-born writer and artist Unica Zürn came late to the Surrealist party, meeting André Breton, Max Ernst and Hans Arp in their Parisian post-war decline. For Zürn, schizophrenia meant that the eruption of inchoate, irrational forces into the everyday celebrated by the Surrealists was not just an artistic goal but a way of life. Since her suicide in 1970 her reputation has been largely eclipsed by that of artist Hans Bellmer, Zürn’s lover of many years, but her drawings reveal a completely autonomous vision.
